WHBC History

Woodland Hills Baptist Church was established as a mission out of the First Baptist Church in Clute, TX. Bro. Duane Phy was the pastor. On September 14th, 1969, the church was founded in a special service. The church met in a building on E Erwin, here in Tyler, and that building is still there today. original church

Bro. David Smith moved to Tyler to help establish this new church and became the first pastor. He is now the retired pastor of Lake Fork Baptist Church. The second pastor was Bro. Bobby Smith, from the Brownsboro, TX area. Bro. Smith later went on to pastor the Faith Baptist Church of Brownsboro, and has since passed away. On May 16, 1982 the church hired their third pastor, Bro. Wiley Bennett. Bro. Bennett retired in 2008, and the Bro. Shane Ogdie was hired that same year. Bro. Bennett has since passed away, but his wife, Carmen, still attends the church.

Woodland Hills Baptist Church now meets at 3400 Old Jacksonville Rd. Tyler, TX, and is a growing church with a rich history. Countless souls have been reached for Christ through this church, and it’s various ministries. We would love for you to visit our church, and see what we are all about!
